Florida district may build high school to relieve crowding

The Seminole County (Fla.) district is considering building a ninth grade-only school or a small high school to relieve enrollment pressure at Seminole High, the system's largest school.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that 3,100 students attend Seminole High in Sanford, and another 1,400 students within the high school's attendance boundaries are bused to other campuses because there's no room at Seminole.

A proposed satellite campus that could hold 1,000 to 1,200 students and open for the 2017-18 school year would cost about $40 million, district officials say.

The district is looking at a potential 30-acre site about three miles from Seminole High. Seminole County hasn't built a new school since Midway Elementary in 2009.
