The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the 126,000-square-foot building that the Cleveland Metropolitan School District has built represents a 33 percent increase in size over the dark, crowded, 1910 brick school building that once stood on the same site and housed the School of the Arts since its founding in 1981.
The school has a capacity of 775 students. The program, which had been for grades seven to 12, will now be for high school grades only.
While the new facility has been under construction, the School of the Arts has been housed in temporary space at the former Harry E. Davis Middle School.
The building is outfitted with airy, well-lighted studio classrooms, a well-equipped black box theater and plenty of rehearsal and instructional spaces for a variety of creative disciplines.
