The Tonganoxie (Kan.) School District is preparing to open what officials say is the largest elementary school in the state.
The Kansas City Star reports that the $27.2 million Tonganoxie Elementary School is the first new elementary school built from the ground up in more than a century.
The two-story, 145,000-square-foot building has capacity for 1,200 students. When classes begin on Aug. 20, about 850 students in prekindergarten through fifth grade will attend classes there.
The city of Tonganoxie, about 30 miles west of Kansas City, Mo., has seen its population grow by 30 percent in the last decade. Voters in the school district approved a bond proposal in 2012 to pay for the new elementary.
The former elementary building, less than half the size of the new campus, was built in 1902.
