Frisco (Texas) district ready to begin construction of its 10th high school

When the $85 million Memorial High School opens in 2017, it will be the district's 4th high school to open in 4 years.

Construction will begin next month on the 10th high school in the fast-growing Frisco (Texas) Independent School District.

If the construction timeline stays on schedule, Memorial High School will open in 2017 and be the fourth high school to open in four years in Frisco, which is about 30 miles north of Dallas.

The school will be built to accommodate 2,100 students. The Frisco school board voted earlier this month to approve a maximum construction price for Memorial of $85.7 million. That is 6 percent less than the original estimated cost of $91 million.

Frisco, which had an enrollment of about 7,200 students in 2000, projects that it will have about 53,000 students in 2015-16. It opened Independence High School in 2014, is preparing to open Reedy High School later this month, and is scheduled to open Lebanon Trail High School in 2016.

Money to build Memorial High School comes from a $775 million bond issue approved by voters in 2014. The Frisco district anticipates that those bond funds will pay for facilities needed to accommodate an enrollment of up to 66,000 students.
