The first-ever residence hall at the New England Institute of Technology in East Greenwich, R.I., is under construction as the school seeks to become a residential campus instead of a commuter school.
The school says the four-story, 416-bed facility is scheduled to open to students in 2017.
The residence hall will offer single- and double-occupancy rooms along with semi-suites. The residence hall will also include student lounges, study rooms, a game room, a fire-placed lounge and multi-purpose common spaces. A campus green will also be incorporated into this initial phase of construction.
NEIT also is adding to its main campus building with space for dining, fitness and additional classrooms. The first floor will have multiple dining services, a restaurant/marketplace, game areas and gathering spaces. The second floor will have an outdoor patio, indoor lounge and a fitness center. The third floor will consist of classroom space.
"These projects mark a point of transformation for NEIT from a commuter college to a residential campus that will enhance the culture and enrich both the academic and social experience of students in positive ways," NEIT president Richard I. Gouse said in a memo to the campus community after construction began.
