The Tacoma News-Tribune reports that construction will begin this summer on the 450-capacity campus. The existing Arlington facility houses about 325 students. Neeley Construction & Cabinet Co. was the low bidder on the construction project at about $16.9 million.
Meanwhile, a Tacoma city hearing examiner has denied an appeal from a neighborhood group that could have delayed Arlington construction. The group had raised objections regarding traffic concerns and district errors made in filing documents.
The new campus is scheduled to open in 2017. During the year of construction, Arlington students will be bused to a transition site at McKinley Elementary School.
Arlington is one of 14 major remodeling or replacement projects that the Tacoma district has undertaken with funds from a $500 million capital construction bond that voters approved in 2013.
