Clemson University has held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening of its new $21.5 million Zucker Family Graduate Education Center in North Charleston, S.C.
The university says the 70,000-square-foot glass and steel building is situated at the Clemson University Restoration Institute, which also is home to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center and the SCE&G Energy Innovation Center.
The Zucker Family Graduate Education Center offers master’s degrees and doctorates in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering; a doctorate in computer science; and a master of fine arts in digital production arts.
The facility has dozens of naturally lighted classrooms, all of which offer real-time video conferencing with the university’s main campus. It also has a variety of public and private collaboration spaces.
Other spaces in the building: a video production room, green-screen/motion capture room, virtual reality simulator, a 35-person theater for screening student work or movies and a rooftop garden that will enable students to work in the fresh air.
The Zucker center also features glass walls, giant monitors and wood beams reclaimed from the dilapidated World War I-era warehouse that sat on the property before construction on the center began last year.
The architects are LS3P and SmithGroupJJR.
