Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., is planning to build a shooting range on land it owns in Campbell County.

WSET-TV reports that the university has requested a special-use permit from the county's board of supervisors to operate a shooting range on 490 acres of property. Construction of the range is projected to cost $3 million.

According to the proposal, the shooting range would be the first National Rifle Association-approved facility on a U.S. college campus. It also would be the first NCAA-certified outdoor shooting range on a college campus that would accommodate all of the Olympic shooting sports.

The outdoor space will include a pistol range, a rifle range, an instructional area, and a three-gun competition range. Future plans envision an indoor firing range.

The proposed development also will include classroom space, awards pavilions and storage areas.

The architect is Wiley | Wilson.
