Construction begins on new high school in Cabarrus County, N.C.

Oct. 21, 2017
District plans to open new campus in Concord, N.C., in 2019.

The Cabarrus County (N.C.) district has broken ground on a $77 million high school in Concord.

The Independent Tribune reports that the three-story building will have 75 classrooms and will accommodate 1,600 students. Officials say the school should relieve crowding at other high schools in the district when it opens in August 2019.

Before officials grabbed their shovels, Project Architect David Bellamy with  went over some of the specifics of the three-story building that is set to open for students in August 2019.

The new school will sit on about 100 acres of land that will also have a 4,000-seat football stadium, a field house, baseball/softball fields, six tennis courts and restroom, band field and four practice fields.

Other features of the school: a 720-seat auditorium, 1,280-seat spectator gym and 150-seat auxiliary gym. Career and Technical labs will include aerospace, logistics/transportation, drafting, construction trades and possibly avionics.

A large group learning space will be provided via a “Stairatorium,” and small group spaces will be placed around the building.

The architect is LS3P Associates.
