Athletic and community center close to completion at San Francisco Waldorf School
The San Francisco Waldorf School is working on the second phase of construction of a sustainably designed athletic and community facility on its high school campus.
The $12 million David Bushnell Center for Athletics and Community consists of a new 9,282-square-foot facility as well as courtyard and gardens for the entire Waldorf School community. It is scheduled to open in December.
The building provides additional meeting space, classroom and kitchen in addition to a flexible indoor athletic and performance space that can accommodate a 358-seat gymnasium or a 150-seat theater.
The Bushnell Center was conceived as a simple steel structure clad in cedar wood siding to complement the texture of the existing concrete high school.
For higher levels of health and sustainability, the designers included a 25-by-100 foot growing wall on the front façade to express the school’s sustainability commitment to the community.
The Bushnell Center is designed to be a net-zero energy building with an aim of meeting LEED Platinum certification standards.
Waldorf High School is San Francisco’s first LEED Gold-certified school.
The architect for Waldorf High School and the Bushnell Center is 450 Architects.
