Nearly eight months after it expected to open a new elementary, the Leland (Mich.) school district has welcomed students to a $24.5 million facility.

The Traverse City Record Eagle reports that the opening was delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Construction crews are still on site and will continue detail work throughout the summer.

The construction projects were broken down into three phases: construction of a new gymnasium, which opened a year behind schedule, demolition of existing buildings, and construction of the new elementary school.

The new building has 17 classrooms. Each is equipped with a projector, white board, and technology paired with Apple TVs and students’ iPads.

“The intention is to have the space itself be flexible enough to grow with whatever learning needs to happen,” says Superintendent Stephanie Long.
