Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon, Iowa., has broken ground on a $9 million renovation and expansion project.

KIWA-Radio reports that the project will enable the college to expand its health science curriculum, as well as accept more students into the college’s healthcare programs.

The college says the project calls for building a 30,000-square-foot addition with new classrooms, offices and public spaces as well as renovating the nearly 18,000 square feet of the existing space.

The upgrades will provide new learning spaces and opportunities for expansion of the nursing, radiologic technology, emergency services and certified nurse aide programs.

“Key features include a simulation area designed as four pods around a center nursing station, kind of like a virtual hospital, and I have to credit all the different faculty and staff who had input into this building," says College President Dr. Alethea Stubbe. "It is is going to be beautiful."

After construction of the new building,  renovations of the the existing health science facilities will be carried out. The entire project is scheduled for completion by December 2022.
