A private high school in Maine has begun construction of a $5.5 million field house.

The Bangor Daily News reports that Foxcroft Academy in Drover-Foxcroft, Maine, is building the Jim Robinson Field House, an 81,000-square-foot structure that will have an artificial turf field large enough to accommodate many large outdoor sporting activities.

It also will have a four-lane, one-fifth-mile walking track around the inside of the building, a jumping pit for indoor track events, locker room facilities, office space and a weight room.

The field house also will be available to area residents.

“I see senior citizens getting up in the morning and walking here because it’s going to provide a very safe walking space,” said Arnold Shorey, head of school at Foxcroft. “...We’re going to do everything we can to make this something for the entire community.”

Construction is scheduled to be completed in June 2002, and a grand opening is set for August 2022 as part of the school's alumni weekend, which will help kick off Foxcroft's bicentennial celebration.

The general contractor is Sheridan Construction.
