Gateway High School in Lehigh Acres, Fla., to open this fall

May 27, 2021
Students will be able to take college and high school classes at the same time through Florida Golf Coast University.

The Lee County (Fla.) district has completed construction of Gateway High School, a $98 million campus in Lehigh Acres that will enable students to dual enroll with Florida Golf Coast University.

The campus consists of three buildings that are three stories high with hallways that extend about 1,200 feet in length, reports the Lehigh Acres Citizen.

Students have the opportunity to be full-time college students and high school students at the same time. The campus will open later this year with 600 freshmen, 500 sophomores and 100 juniors. Students may choose to enroll in one of five career academies — veterinarian, medical, carpentry, cyber security and engineering.

Principal Neketa Watson said security will be a priority at the new campus. It will have over 100 cameras, single-point entry into the building and a guard gate. Anyone entering must stop at the guard gate.

Once individuals get to the front office, a camera will look at their IDs before a staff member buzzes them into the building. The front office, too, is secure; people will need to display a badge to be buzzed further onto the campus.

The campus now has one school resource officer, and the district plans to have two when the 2021-22 school year begins.
