University of South Carolina is building mixed-use complex with housing for 1,800 students

The Campus Village project is billed as the largest in the university's history.

Construction has begun on a $210 million mixed-use student housing and retail complex at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C.

The Columbia Regional Business Report says that the Campus Village project, the largest in the history of the university, will add 1,800 beds, a dining facility and a transportation hub in space previously occupied by The Cliffs apartment complex, which was demolished last year.

The university says in a news release that Phase One of Campus Village, expected to be completed in fall 2023, will consist of four residential buildings. Phase Two will feature two suite-style residential buildings, and Phase Three will have apartment-style living spaces on the site of the former Carolina Gardens housing community.

The Campus Village is one of two high-profile projects underway at the university.

The university also has received approval from a state legislative committee for a plan to replace the University of South Carolina Medical School campus with a $300 million facility. For the existing medical school building to remain viable, it would need an estimated $75 million in upgrades.

The proposed 16-acre site for the new medical school buildings would be home to a 130,000-square-foot medical building and a 162,000-square-foot research building and lab.
