Silver Creek (Ind.) district plans $55 million in facility upgrades
The Silver Creek (Ind.) district is preparing to move forward with major districtwide building renovations through a $55 million bond sale.
The former West Clark (Ind.) district split into the separate Silver Creek and Borden-Henryville corporations last year after a referendum, reports the News and Tribune.
The building projects are projected to begin in early 2022.
In 2017, voters rejected an $82 million referendum that would have mainly gone toward building and program improvements at the Silver Creek campus; that prompted the push to split into two districts.
The most dramatic renovations will take place at Silver Creek's high school, which was built in the early 1960s for about 550 students, but now has about 900.
Proposed improvements at the high school:
- The addition of about 20 classrooms
- Expanded gymnasium space
- A new or expanded cafeteria
Construction of a 15,000-square-foot wing at Silver Creek Primary of about 15,000 square feet will enable the district to move second grade from Silver Creek Elementary to Silver Creek Primary
A new wing at Silver Creek Middle School will add 15,000 to 20,000 square feet for classroom space. Silver Creek Elementary also will be updated.
Construction is likely to begin in early 2021, and the project is expected to take at least two years.
