Additional wings at the existing Fletcher Elementary School will provide space for all pre-K through fifth grade students in the district.

The Tonawanda (N.Y.) district has begun construction on a $53.4 million elementary school.

WGRZ reports that all district elementary school students will attend Fletcher Elementary once the construction project is complete. The expanded school will serve grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.

Much of the original Fletcher Elementary structure will be kept intact during construction. However, a two-story wing is being built on either side of the existing school. The campus also will have an expanded bus loop, additional parking, new play fields and playgrounds, the district says in a news release

For the duration of construction, fifth grade students will be housed in a separate wing in the middle school, andfourth-grade students will be housed in temporary classrooms installed at Mullen and Riverview elementary schools.

The project will be paid for by a combination of state aid and district funds.

Construction will continue through 2023.
