The Arizona Legislature has allocated an additional $18.8 million to the Maricopa (Ariz.) school district toward construction of its second high school.

InMaricopa.Com reports that recent legislation increased the funding formula for new school construction. In 2018, the Maricopa district was allocated $22.4 million for construction of the school; the revised formula almost doubles the School Facilities Board construction grant to $41.3 million.

The school is scheduled to open in July 2022 and will have the style of a career academy or small learning communities.

Maricopa Monitor reports that Phase 1 of construction will consist of four modular academies or small learning communities that can be expanded as the school grows.

The cost of Phase 1 is about $26 million, which will go toward the land purchase and initial construction. Any additional buildings or add-ons will have to be funded locally through bond measures.
