Sumner High School in Sumner, Wash., is undergoing a $37.8 million renovation and expansion.
The addition of a three-story building will provide a new common area, library, kitchen and cafeteria. There will also be additional classrooms as well as technology and security and upgrades, reports The News Tribune.
The building will be constructed on the high school's softball field.
The existing high school building was constructed in 1954 and did not have enough space. Some students resorted to eating lunch in the hallway because the lunchroom was too crowded. The last update to the school was in 1992, when the gym was built.
Phase two of construction will add 11 classrooms, eight tennis courts as well as replace the pool and performing arts center.
The new building is funded through a $145.6 million bond that voters approved in February 2016.
Completion is expected to finish between fall 2022 and spring 2023.
BLRB Architects is designing the facility.
