A charter school is being constructed in Red Lake, Minn. for the children of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Tribe.

The Endazhi-Nitaawiging School will  have a strong focus on the heritage of the Red Lake Nation Tribe, reports The Bemidji Pioneer.

Students will be immersed in the study of Ojibwe language, culture, leadership and environmental stewardship.

The school is set to open for grades K to 5 and will add a grade level each year until 2025-26, when it will accommodate grades K to 8.

The school says in its vision statement that it aims to “create confident leaders grounded in their true inherent identities and to ensure that they are academically, socially and spiritually prepared to positively change the community and world.”

The Red Lake Nation council collaborated with the Native American Community Academy Inspired Schools Network to establish the school.

Funding for the $8 million first phase of the school comes from aid the Red Lake Nation received from the American Rescue Plan Act.

The school is set to open in fall 2022.
