Reading Area Community College in Reading, Pa., has plans to build a $33 million child care center on its campus

The facility would serve about 156 children from ages 6 months to five years old, reports The Reading Eagle

The community college is asking the Reading school district to contribute $3 million toward the project. The county and city governments are also being asked to pitch in.

The facility would be built on what is now a campus parking lot and would be owned and operated by the community college.

Data from the Berks County Early Learning Resource Center showed that of the 36 high-quality centers in the county, only two are in Reading.

Having a child care center would enable the community college to build upon its early childhood education program.

It would also serve as a high-quality child care facility for the children of students, faculty and community members.

United Way of Berks County has committed $250,000 per year for five years to the project.
