The Spartanburg (S.C.) district has begun construction on a middle school in Duncan.
The new project is part of a district plan to build and upgrade existing facilities to meet enrollment growth over the next five years, reports The Post and Courier.
A $295 million bond referendum approved last month by voters will enable the district to build two new schools and expand existing campuses.
The new buildings will increase the number of the district's schools from 12 to 14.
In addition to the middle school, an elementary school will be built behind Wellford Academy of Science and Technology.
Byrnes High School, also in Duncan, will be renovated and expanded.
Reidville Elementary School, in Reidville will also be renovated to increase capacity.
Construction of the new elementary and middle school will cost the district about $115 million.
Construction is expected to be complete by 2024.
