The Alexandria (Va.) district is adding a 1,600-student building to the Minnie Howard campus of Alexandria City High School.
The 313,355-square-foot building is being constructed to address the district's growing enrollment, reports Patch.com.
The Minnie Howard campus, which now serves as a ninth-grade center, is a few blocks away from the high school's main campus. The new Minnie Howard building will have capacity for 1,600 students in grades nine through 12.
The school board decided in 2019 to expand the Minnie Howard campus and keep it part of Alexandria City High rather than build a second district high school.
Alexandria City High had been known as T.C. Williams High School until it was renamed in 2021.
Once the new building is constructed, the existing Minnie Howard facility will be torn down and replaced with athletic and recreational facilities, a bus loop and parking, reports ALXnow.
The new building also will have an aquatic facility, and multipurpose fields and courts for community and school use. It is scheduled to open in 2024.
