The $81 million, three-story facility will be built on the existing junior high site and will accommodate about 1,500 students, reports Community Impact Newspaper.
The junior highwill be demolished once the new middle school is built.
The new school is part of the district's middle school transformation plan, which will move sixth grade students from elementary to middle schools. Richardson will upgrade existing junior high campuses over several years to make room the additional students.
The district hopes to have all junior highs converted to middle schools by 2030-31.
Lake Highlands Middle is set to open in fall 2024.
