Work begins on a $ 5.7 million addition at a Gordonsville, Va., elementary school.
The Orange County (Va.) district has broken ground on a $5.7 million expansion and renovation at Gordon-Barbour Elementary School in Gordonsville.
The school now houses K-5 grades as well as three Head Start classes, reports The Orange County Review.
School officials said the existing kindergarten classes are in a detached annex that was built in 1975. The school's annex for fourth and fifth graders was built in 1978.
The addition will provide space for three first-grade classrooms, three kindergarten classrooms, two resource rooms, a conference room, restrooms and a common area.
The existing kindergarten annex will become a Head Start facility.
Other improvements to the elementary school include an outdoor learning space, a security vestibule in the front lobby and an accessible ramp in the main building.
The project is expected to be completed by fall 2023.
Stantec is the architect, and Kenbridge Construction is the builder.
