Eastern Michigan University's plan to overhaul student housing on the Ypsilanti campus is underway.
The $200 million Welcome Home 2025 plan calls for the construction of two residence halls, demolition of older units, and the renovation of all remaining residence halls except Wise Hall, which was renovated in 2017, the university says in a news release.
One of the new residence halls, named Lakeview, will house about 400 students in apartment-style units. It will be situated next to the university's student center and will overlook the pond on the north side of campus.
The other new residence hall, named Westview, will be on the west side of campus near the athletics complex. The 300-bed facility will replace existing apartments, which will be demolished.
The goal of the project is to provide every student housing resident with quality and affordable housing equipped with the technology to meet the demands of the academic world.
Gilbane Development Company is the contractor for the project.
