The Brevard County (Fla.) district is constructing a $45 million middle school near Melbourne.

The new school will be built next to Viera High School in the Viera community, reports Viera Voice

The middle school will be a one-story complex with three buildings. The 138,000-square-foot facility will be able to accommodate about 1,002 students and will feature a track, grass field areas, four hard courts for tennis and a gym.

Viera High School is designated as a hurricane shelter for the public, and the new middle school could become a supplemental shelter.

The school is expected to be open in 2024.

Wharton-Smith Inc. is the builder.
