Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti has begun construction on a $7.5 million 3D arts complex.
MLive.com reports that the Windgate Arts Complex will be part of the university's School of Art and Design. It will house a variety of programs such as sculpture, ceramics, furniture design, digital fabrication, 3D design and metalsmithing.
Part of the funding for the facility comes from a $3.2 million investment from the arts advocacy group Windgate Foundation.
The approximately 24,000-square-foot facility will rise on the northwest corner of the Ypsilanti campus. It is scheduled for completion by the end of 2023.
University officials hope the complex enhances partnerships across Washtenaw County, including organizations such as the Riverside Arts Center. Potential statewide partnerships include Michigan teachers participating in a summer institute led by EMU art faculty.
“It has been a genuine thrill to see this dream evolve into reality for the School of Art and Design and the EMU community,” said Sandra Murchison, EMU professor and art and design school’s director.
