Construction has begun on $166 million renovation of Nauset Regional High School in Eastham, Mass.

The Cape Cod Times reports that the project will add two buildings to the campus and renovate all existing buildings. The first phase includes the construction of the new buildings and is expected to be done by fall 2024.

Following the first phase, construction will shift to the west side of campus and renovations to the A,B, C and D buildings.

The high school had 780 students in grades nine through 12 in 2022-23. The renovation will address accessibility deficiencies, security limitations, and inadequate facilities.

The construction was budgeted at $104.9 million in 2019 and the project was approved by voters in March 2021 by the four towns that comprise the regional school district — Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, and Brewster. This year, voters approved spending up to an additional $38 million needed for the project.

The original campus opened in 1972.

The new “E” building will be a three-story building housing science and other STEM classrooms.

Another new building, “F” will house a cafeteria and kitchen that will overlook and open out onto an expanded internal courtyard.

A new performing arts center will feature an auditorium with a capacity of 750 people, used for concerts, town meetings, lectures and other performances.
