The Pecos-Barstow-Toyah (Texas) district has opened n 87,000-square-foot replacement elementary school in Pecos.
The new Austin Elementary replaces a 70-year-old facility and features learning nooks, music, and art rooms, as well as a 1,000-foot drop-off lane to ease traffic concerns. The campus is home to pre-kindergarten through first grade students; the old school served students in grades one to three.
To observe the district’s history, the archway from Pecos Elementary was brought to the new campus to pay homage to the Pecos community.
“The grand opening of the new Austin Elementary is a celebration of our community’s resilience and determination,” said Brent Jaco, superintendent of Pecos-Barstow-Toyah district.
The architect is VLK Architects.
The previous elementary campus will be transformed into a Staff Professional Development & Parent Support Center. Funding for the new Austin Elementary School comes from a $178.6 million bond proposal approved by voters in May 2021.
