The Post and Courier reports that the convocation center will be funded by a 1% sales tax that helps pay for the building needs of Horry County's public schools and two colleges. Officials did not provide an estimate for the cost of the center.
The university's men's and women's basketball and volleyball teams now play home games in the HTC Center, which holds about 3,600 people.
Other athletics projects in the works at CCU include an indoor practice facility, new soccer complex, new track and field complex, a new scoreboard and ribbon board at Brooks Stadium, a new field apron at Springs Brooks Stadium (baseball), new seats at St. John Stadium (softball), and an Olympic sports complex.
