First new elementary in 20 years is coming to Albemarle County (Virginia) district
The Albemarle County (Virginia) district is building its first new elementary school in 20 years.
Charlottesville Tomorrow reports that the district's 16th elementary school is scheduled to open in Charlottesville in 2026-27.
Matt Wertman, the district's interim director of building services, says the new campus is within walking distance of an existing elementary--Mountain View.
The district could not find any suitable properties within the timeline that was necessary for the scheduled opening of the new school, so the school board opted to build on a piece of property that it already owned, Wertman said.
Mountain View will switch to pre-kindergarten through second grade, and the new elementary school will house third through fifth graders. Wertman projects 379 students will attend the new elementary school when it opens. The capacity of the new school will be 500 students.
The architect is VMDO Architects.
