The Putnam County (Florida) District has broken ground on a $68 million elementary school in Crescent City.

The Palatka Daily News reports that the district plans to relocate stuents from Middleton-Burney Elementary School to the new, unnamed campus when it opens before or during the 2025-26 school year.

The new school is part of the school district’s 10-year revitalization plan, Superintendent Rick Surrency said. Funds for construction come from a 2022 bond referendum.

The groundbreaking is part of the first phase of the district’s revitalization plan, which also includes construction of an elementary school in Paltaka.

Phase 2 will see the district build a second Palatka elementary school and an elementary school in Melrose. During Phase 3, extensive renovations will be carried out at Browning-Pearce Elementary School in San Mateo and Robert H. Jenkins Jr. Elementary School in Interlachen.

In addition to building new elementary schools, the district is using state funds to construct a replacement for Crescent City Junior-Senior High School.

In Phases 2 and 3 of the junior-senior high school builds, the district will seek state funds to build new facilities in Interlachen and Palatka
