$64.4 million intermediate school is under construction in Winfall, North Carolina

Nov. 4, 2024
When it opens in 2026, the school will replace 2 existing campuses in the Perquimans County district.

The Perquimans County (North Carolina) District has broken ground on a $64.4 million intermediate school in Winfall that will replace two schools.

The Daily Advance reports that if all goes according to schedule, the 158,000-square-foot school will be completed and ready to open in May 2026.

The new campus will replace Hertford Grammar School and Perquimans Middle. The school is being built on an 80-acre tract in Winfall that the county purchased the site a year ago for $900,000.

"The new intermediate school will be more than a building," Schools Superintendent Tanya Turner said. "It will be a testament to our belief in ‘Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day.'"

The architect is Hite Associates, and the builder is WIMCO Corporation.

The school district has received a $12 million state grant to help pay for the new school. That grant was in addition to the $36.9 million Needs-Based Public School Capital Fund grant the district previously received from state to help defray the school’s costs.

The $48.9 million in grants, added to a $5 million appropriation from state lawmakers that Perquimans County commissioners allocated for the new school, gives the school district roughly $54 million to put toward the school’s cost.
