The Sussex County (Delaware) Vocational Technical School District has broken ground on what is being described as the largest school construction project in state history--a new Sussex Technical High School.

The Cape Gazette reports that the 380,000-square-foot vocational school in Georgetown will increase capacity from 1,350 students to 1,800 when the doors open in September 2027. At that point, the old school will be demolished, and a new stadium will open for use by September 2028.

The $250 million campus will be two stories high in some places and three stories in others, the Daily State News reports.

The school will continue to provide training for high-demand vocational careers and trades, apprenticeship programs, pathways to the military and other postsecondary options, Superintendent Kevin Carson said.

Also, more than 4,000 adult residents will continue to benefit from the adult education program, he added.
