Syracuse University has announced plans to build and operate a new full-service hotel near its main campus in Syracuse, New York.

The Syracuse Post-Standard reports that the roughly 200-room hotel, with its own restaurant and event space, is expected to open by fall 2027.

The university says it has been meeting with high-profile hotel brands to determine which brand meet the needs and expectations of the campus community.

The announcement comes on the heels of the university’s recent decision to convert its 200-room Sheraton University Hotel into student housing and its acquisition earlier this year of the Hotel Skyler, a boutique hotel adjacent to the new hotel space.

Other recent changes have affected hotel room availability near the Syracuse University campus. That includes the closing in October of the 279-room Crowne Plaza hotel as it prepares to transition to an apartment building.

University officials say the new hotel fits in with its comprehensive housing strategy, contained in a plan it calls the Campus Framework. That plan has also led the university to spend more than $140 million on properties near campus in recent years.

“We are confident a new hotel will not only serve our campus community well, it will also further strengthen the university’s role as a vibrant and integral part of the city of Syracuse and Onondaga County," said Brett Padgett, theh university’s senior vice president and chief financial officer.
