The Calvert County (Maryland) district is building a facility in Owings that will replace Northern Middle School.

The Southern Maryland Chronicle reports that the 109,237-square-foot facility will have a capacity of 796 students and is aiming to be certified through Green Globes, an environmentally friendly school building.

“The groundbreaking for the replacement of Northern Middle School represents our commitment to providing state-of-the-art learning environments that inspire our students, support our educators, and enrich our community,” said District Superintendent Andraé Townsel.

The new school will be constructed just north of the existing building. When construction is completed, the existing school will be demolished to make room for parking and vehicle dropoff/pick-up areas.

The district expects the new school to be ready for use during the 2026-27 academic year; the final phase of construction, including demolition and site improvements, is expected to conclude in spring 2027.

The architect is Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates Architects and the builder is Keller CM
