The Kalamazoo (Michigan) school board has approved a $41.5 million plan to build a new elementary school in Kalamazoo Township.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports that when construction is complete, the campus will  become the new home for El Sol Elementary School.

Work will begin this fall and take place over two years, Superintendent Darrin Slade said.

The new school will be built on a 12.1-acre property the district owns. The existing El Sol location is 6.15 acres, including the next door Community Education Center at Chenery Auditorium.

The increased space will allow for more outdoor learning opportunities and safer bus and parent drop-off.

The district may decide to expand El Sol to incorporate preschool through eighth grade. It now has students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

El Sol Elementary School has been the existing building since 2008.
