The partially completed indoor athletic training facility at the new Gulf Shores High School in Gulf Shores, Alabama, collapsed early Monday morning.
WKRG-TV reports that no one was injured when the structure collapsed, but construction equipment was buried underneath the steel girders.
“This is a covered practice facility with artificial turf and associated locker rooms and other facilities, and it’s just coming up out of the ground,” said Gulf Shores city spokesman Grant Brown.
Neighbors reported hearing a loud noise between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m.
"I just hear this loud boom, like a roar of a crash," said Carly Gray. "I didn’t know what it was...had no clue at all.”
The $7.5 million facility is on the site of the new Gulf Shores High School, which is scheduled to open in 2026.
Gulf Shores School Superintendent Matt Akin told Gulf Coast Media that the collapse was part of the practice facility, which is not connected to other parts of the building or the main school.
He said inspectors and contractors are working to determine the cause of the collapse.
