Classes have begun for students in the new Torrington High School in Torrington, Connecticut.

The New Haven Register reports that the four-story, 310-000-square-foot building will house both middle and high school grades when it is completed. The middle school wing is scheduled to open for classes in September.

The project will cost about $179.5 million; the state is reimbursing the city 85%.

The new facility is replacing a building that opened in 1963.

The school has new construction and engineering labs, a 495-seat auditorium, a podcast studio and a music studio.

The auditorium features cameras and microphones placed strategically to record events. A podcast recording studio will be used by Music Tech II students.

Across the hallway is a modern band room, with electronic instruments and a DJ stand.

The Connie Donahue Gym, the only structure from the old high school campus to be spared the wrecking ball, is to be renovated.

The S/L/A/M Collaborative is the architect and O&G Industries is the construction manager.
