The Winston-Salem Journal reports that the $36 million building is being constructed on land that was once the site of a Thomasville Furniture factory and includes soil contaminated from decades of manufacturing.
The property was submitted into the Brownfields program, a federal program that works with developers to reuse sites contaminated with environmental toxins.
Brunson is scheduled to be the first public school in the state to be built on a brownfield.
The district purchased the property in 2021. The location was chosen after an extensive search. One option was replacing the school at its existing site, but because it sits on a floodplain, it was deemed to be the most expensive of the options.
The new Brunson is scheduled to open for the 2026-27 school year.
