The first charter middle school in Tacoma, Wash., is getting ready to open in August.
Destiny Middle School will be housed in the former Rogers Elementary School building that the Tacoma district closed in 2002.
For 2015-16, the school will have 200 sixth-graders. In succeeding years, seventh and eighth grades will be added.
The Tacoma Daily Index reports the site has undergone a $6.9 million renovation in advance of its opening. The school will be operated by Green Dot Schools, a charter organization that runs 21 schools in the Los Angeles area.
Destiny is among three charter schools set to open in Tacoma later this year. The others are Summit Olympus High School and Soar Academy, a K-8 school.
The first charter schools in Washington state opened in 2014. Voters approved an initiative in 2012 to permit charters.
