The Columbia State reports that the School of Journalism and Mass Communications is now in a renovated three-story building that had been the Health Sciences building. Since 1969, the journalism school had been situated in the Carolina Coliseum, an arena on campus that also has classrooms on the lower levels.
The $25 million renovation project provides the journalism school with about 54,000 square feet of space, nearly double what had been available in its previous location.
The new space will have a broadcast studio and control room that will enable senior students to produce a daily news show. Outside the journalism school will be a greenhouse broadcast studio--a glass-box studio similar to studios used by morning TV news shows.
The program has about 1,500 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students.
