Ten years after sustaining devastating damage in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a New Orleans elementary school building has reopened.
WWL-TV reports that McDonogh 42 Elementary Charter School received a $17 million renovation and addition that includes the latest technology, a media center, science labs, music and art rooms.
The flooding that followed Hurricane Katrina in 2005 inundated the school building, which was constructed in 1925, under three to six feet of water.
Officials from the Louisiana Recovery School District and the Choice Foundation, the charter group that operates the school, were on hand for the dedication of the 70,000-square-foot facility.
The renovation of the McDonogh 42 is one of many construction projects that are being carried out in Orleans Parish as part of a $1.8 billion school facilities master plan.
