Roton Middle School in Norwalk, Conn., will undergo a two-year renovation to remove asbestos flooring.

The Norwalk district said that because of the size of the school and the amount of asbestos flooring, the replacement project will be split carried out over two summers, reports The Register Citizen

The renovation is expected to cost about $670,000.

Classrooms will be outfitted with standard 12-by-12-inch vinyl composite tile, which does not contain asbestos. The existing tile was installed in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The district's asbestos management plan calls for renovating several schools that have decades-old asbestos tiling.
