Penn State has broken ground on a $28 million expansion of the Nursing Sciences Building on the University Park campus.

The expansion and renovation will give the Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing a new 180-person simulation-ready classroom and a knowledge commons for students across 2,700 additional square feet.

The flexible learning environments and communal areas designed for group study and discussion will promote a culture of collaboration among students, faculty and researchers.

The facility is the primary facility for the college, which serves more than 2,200 undergraduate and graduate students on 13 Penn State campuses.

The building underwent a minor renovation in 2017 when a new main entrance was added. The new project will replace the façade on the existing structure to correct water intrusion problems.

About 25,000 square feet of the building will undergo various levels of renovation, ranging from light touch-ups to fully renewed spaces. All told, the planned renovations will mitigate an estimated $12 million in maintenance backlog costs, the university says.
