The Marshalltown (Iowa) school board has voted to pursue a rebuild of the district's middle school.

The Times-Republican reports that school board members decided that renovating, rebuilding and expanding Miller Middle School was the best option.

If the necessary signatures are collected, voters will decide on Nov. 5 whether to approve a $57 million bond issue to help pay for the overhaul.  The deadline to file the petition for the election at the auditor’s office is Aug. 28.

The project will resize classrooms and add another on the southwest side of the building. On the east side, larger commons, kitchen, entry, leadership space and gym will be constructed. New artificial turf and a track will be installed at the Franklin Elementary field to accommodate middle school sports.

Deb Wollam, a member of the stakeholder group that recommended the plan, said the upgrades would enable the school to meet student needs for generations to come.
