The Flint Journal reports that
Beecher High School will open again in 2026 with the help of a $10 million grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.
The district closed the Beecher High building in 2004 to address a fiscal deficit. The high school program was relocated to the district's middle school, where it remains.
The renovated Beecher High School will have 20 classrooms with space for up to 500 students, according to a Mott Foundation release.
“This is a great opportunity to help one of our local school districts improve outcomes and strengthen the educational ecosystem in our community," said Ridgway White, president/CEO of the Mott Foundation
The district estimates the renovation will cost around $18 million. In addition to the Mott Foundation,
the state of Michigan and local philanthropist Matt Rizik have contributed significant support to the renovation, the Mott Foundation says.
The building will get a new entrance, HVAC system, lockers, roof, windows, flooring, doors and a relocated gym and cafeteria.
Retiring Beecher School Superintendent Richard Klee announced intentions to renovate and reopen the high school building in February 2023.
The plan is to reopen the old Beecher High School, revert the current high school building to a middle school and move grades five and six into that building, allowing for more room at Dailey Elementary.
