States where the greatest number of charter schools shut down in spring 2017

The overall number of charter schools is increasing, but many schools do not succeed and are forced to close.

More than 300 new charter schools opened in the United States in fall 2017, according to the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, but the odds are that not all of them will achieve their academic goals or maintain financial health.

Statistics from the Alliance show that in spring 2017, 238 charter schools closed their doors. California, which has the most charter schools in operation, also is the state with the greatest number of charter schools—46—that did not survive beyond spring 2017.
