States with the most instructional staff in public schools in 2018-19

Estimates from the National Education Association say nearly 3.8 million instructional staff were working in public schools in 2018-19.

The number of instructional staff in public schools increased slightly in 2018-19, according to data from the National Education Association.

The NEA's Rankings of the States 2019 and Estimates of School Statistics 2020 says there were 3,792,530 instructional staff working in public K-12 districts in 2018-19—a 0.53% increase over the 3,772,485 in 2017-18.

Even though California has the largest population and the most students, it had 56,000 fewer instructional staff than Texas, which had the most instructional staff—410,644.
